OK, I have to admit I have no idea exactly who Gibson is marketing this guitar at, though I suspect it might turn out to be popular with the “Weekend Warrior” crowd… I mean, I don’t know too many young players who want to haul around a guitar with racing stripes…
That said, the new Gibson SG GT does look like a real guitarist’s guitar – meaning it’ appears to have some real power under the hood/
The SG GT is expected to sport an old-school ’61 SG neck (can you say “playability,”) a pair of coil-tapped humbucker pickups, strap locks (trust me, it’s hard to look badass when your guitar slips off of it’s strap and lands on your foot!) and even locking tuning machines and cable jack.
Looks like a powerhouse… heck, I’ve never even heard of a locking cable jack.
The Gibson SG GT Features–
- Mahogany Body
- Mahogany ’61 SG Neck
- Ebony Fretboard With 22 Frets
- Coil-Tapped 490R & 498T Humbucker Pickups
- Two Each Volume & Tone Controls
- 3-Way Pickup Switching
- Locking Grover® Tuners
- Dual Truss Rods (for serious neck reinforcement)
- Dunlop Strap Locks
- Locking Cable Jack
- High Pass Tone Filter
- Chrome Plated Hardware
The SG GT also comes with a hard case, and sports some of Gibson’s most entertaining finish names yet, including: Daytona Blue, Muscle Green, Phantom Black, and more…

They market it to people who gig much and need a reliable guitar. Straplocks, locks, etc. That could be why they made it “GT” with the stripes, “on the road” if you understand, as a touring guitar.

I think they’re marketing it to ME … someone who has never owned an SG, nor owned a real hot rod … so in my case, yes, the weekend warrior!
So, Cary … have you gotten to play one, yet? Get them to ship it to me, and I’ll try it out for you and ship it back. ;) I’ll even write a review. lol
