“Yesterday…love was such an easy game to play.”
—Paul McCartney
Epiphone has announced the final, limited edition re-release of their classic 1964 Paul McCartney Texan — a replica of the acoustic guitar that Paul played during The Beatles’ ground-breaking performance on the Ed Sullivan Show, not to mention the recording of “Yesterday,” arguably one of The Beatles’ most beloved songs.
The 1964 Texan is an accurate reproduction of the one McCartney still owns and plays today; right down to the custom-mixed antiqued laquer finish, plastic button tuners, and mother of pearl inlays. He’s rumored to have bought his in ‘65, for a paltry $175.
Not only is the Texan sure to be a great guitar, but part of its proceeds will be going to Adopt-A-Minefield, a charity bent on ridding the world of mine fields, and helping rehabilitate landmine victims. Good music for a good cause.

Can you tell me if Paul McCartney ever played a Gretsch guitar? I have a bet w/my brother-in-law on this. I am POSITIVE I had a picture of him on my wall as a girl, holding a Gretsch. Please let me know if you know the answer or how I might find it out. Thank you! Mari Schmidt

Mari, Hi!, I don’t think Paul ever played a Gretsch. To my knowledge in the early sixties, he only had a hand full of guitars, i.e, a 1964 Epiphone Texan Acoustic, and a 1965 Epiphone Casino (Hofner Bass aside) which is kind of similar to one of the gretsches used by Harrison, such as the Tennesse and the Country Gentlemen which were both kind of hollow electric guitars. By the time of Revolver, he also acquired a Fender Strat 65 or 66 along with George and John (Sonic Blue I believe was the color). You can actually hear Paul’s strat in the solo of TAXMAN which appears in Revolver. Later on he aqcuired a Rickenbacker bass which was used mainly throughout Sgt Peppers and MMT and the WA, and lastly for the Let it be film, you can watch him perform Two of Us with a Martin D-28 Acoustic. Throughout the hole Anthology documentary (which rocks by the way!), I don’t recall Paul using a Gretsch Guitar. Somewhere along that documentary he appears using Hofner and Zenith guitars (the Zenith was the very first guitar he owned which he traded in for the trumpet his dad gave him for his 16th or so birthday). The Gretsches were mainly used by Harrison inclding a GT 1958 Duo Jet with a Bigsby Tremolo. Well anyway, hope this helps and if you do happen to discover that Paul played a Gretsch please let me know your source, as a Beatles fan and a Beatles guitar collector, I would love to know. Have a great week. Manuel,
