OK, we’ve made the move to our new host, A Small Orange, and for most of you things should be looking like they normally do around here. However, there could be a few remaining DNS issues for another day or so.
For those wondering why we changed hosts, well, we’d been with DreamHost for over a year, mostly because of their one-click support of WordPress, and their very reasonable prices.
Unfortunately, this year has seen a lot of growing pains for DreamHost, not to mention a long string of very, very bad luck, and while I still really like the company, the truth of the matter is that I can’t allow the success of my websites to be dictated by their bad luck.
The down-time had simply become unacceptable. No hard feelings, guys!
However, in a stroke of self-proclaimed genius (wink, wink) I’ve decided to keep all of my sites backed-up in full at DreamHost – as this should allow me to quickly fix any catastrophic disasters that could potentially come down the pipeline (knock on wood!)
A quick switch of the DNS Nameservers, and an upload of the MySQL databases, and I can be up and running on either host in a number of hours… Nice!
So why did I choose A Small Orange? Well, they are coming highly recommended these days, and while they don’t offer the kind of WordPress hand holding that DreamHost does, the reality is that I don’t really require that kind of help any more, and reliability is my main concern.
I’ve noticed a marked speed increase since switching to A Small Orange, too…
