I’m gonna’ lay this on the line right from the get-go – Gibson’s Pete Townshend Deluxe Les Paul #9 looks like one seriously sweet guitar. On top of an incredible set of features, and of course its singular style, this one’s pretty much bound to be a collector’s item if for no other reason than the fact that Gibson’s Custom Shop is only producing 75 of them.
Talk about a limited edition.
Word has it that the Pete Townshend Les Paul #9 is an accurate reproduction of the LP Deluxe that Townshend played on stage during The Who’s popular heyday of the 1970s, and like the original it sports a highly customized pickup/control set-up, not to mention a ton of other fun tweaks.
Pickups are a DiMarzio Dual Sound naked humbucker in the middle position, sandwiched by a pair of mini-humbuckers at the bridge & neck. Extra toggles have been added for control of the DiMarzio, including one that taps the pickup and one to throw it out of phase.
Other unique features include a 3-piece pancake body (maple, mahogany, poplar,) Pete Townshend slim-profile neck, a Nashville TOM bridge, top-hat knobs, custom end-pins & metal jackplate, and of course that oh-so-cool “9” graphic that gives this guitar its name.
