Catching Up With Gibson's Guitar Of The Week

Les-Paul-SilverburstWow… take a trip to Hawaii for two weeks and you miss all the fun 😉

Gibson announced two new Guitar Of The Week instruments while I was gone, plus another one just this morning, but the biggest news out of the three will undoubtedly be Guitar Of The Week #16––the long awaited return of the Les Paul Silverburst.

I don’t know what it is that’s so alluring about this uniquely beautiful finish, but I get at least a few requests each month for info on where to pick one up. Gibson also produced an Epiphone version of the LP Silverburst, and the guitar was exceedingly popular, but unfortunately it went out of production last year. (UPDATE: Looks like the Epi is back in play, and selling for around $600.)

This latest version of the Les Paul Silverburst will be built upon Gibson’s Classic Custom LP format, and with just 400 units being produced I think we can safely expect it to reach instant Collector’s Item status.

The guitar will feature a carved maple top, mahogany body, ’60s “slim taper” mahogany neck (24 3/4″ scale length,) ebony fretboard with 22 frets, custom white body & fretboard binding, 57 Classic humbucker at the neck, ’57 Classic Plus humbucker at the bridge, dual volume & tone controls, and 3-way pickup switching.

Sg-Special-White-JazzUnfortunately, Guitar Of The Week #17––the SG Special w/White Jazz Pickguard––has got to be one of the uglier guitars that Gibson has managed to produce in this series… oh well, I guess there’s no accounting for taste.

The guitar is basically a traditional SG Special, but in this case decked out in a Satin Classic White finish, and adorned with a full-frontal white “jazz” pickguard.

Specs are pretty standard here, with a mahogany body, ’60s “slim taper” mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard with 22 frets, chrome plated hardware, black “top hat” knobs, Grover tuners, and a stopbar tailpiece.

Electronics include a 490R Alnico humbucker at the neck, 490T Alnico humbucker at the bridge, two volume controls, two tone controls, and 3-way pickup switching. Ships with a plush gig bag.

Sg Supreme Bass FireburstLast but not least, just a few hours ago Gibson unveiled this four-string beauty––Guitar Of The Week #18, the new SG Supreme Bass Fireburst.

Apparently based on the popular SG Supreme design, this one is expected to sport a mahogany body with a AAA flame maple top, and a rather in-your-face Fireburst finish.

Other features will include a mahogany neck w/rounded bass profile (30 1/2-inch scale length,) Gibson Holly headstock inlay, rosewood fretboard with 20 frets & “antique” trapezoid inlays, chrome hardware, BAT4 bridge, black speed knobs, and classic Grover Shamrock tuning machines.

Electronics are to include a vintage-style TB Plus bass humbucker at the neck, Bass Mini-humbucker at the bridge, dual volume & tone controls, and 3-way pickup witching. Ships with a black hard case.

As with the other instruments in this series, all three of these guitars will be available in a limited run of just 400 units.
