As a companion piece for their upcoming review of IK Multimedia’s Amplitube Jimi Hendrix digital modeling software, Guitar Player Magazine’s Michael Ross has recorded a pretty impressively authentic Hendrix-style jam in Ableton Live, and uploaded it to their website as an mp3.
For the recording he apparently used a vintage ’65 Strat fitted with DiMarzio Virtual Vintage pickups, and recorded it all direct via an M-Audio Firewire 1814 computer iterface. Unfortunately Guitar Player hasn’t published the review itself online––you’ll have to pick up the August ’07 issue for the whole low-down––but the demo is definitely worth a listen.
Ross makes use of a number of Amplitube Jimi Hendrix’s tasty pre-sets, including “Are You Experienced,” “Third Stone From The Sun,” and “Fire” (Yep, the pre-sets are named after distinct sections of various Hendrix tunes,) and digs into the Rotary Speaker emulator, UniVibe, and Fuzz-One for some of that over-the-top Hendrix flare.
Amazingly, the Wah pedal was controlled entirely by mouse, and actually, I had this same problem when I tested the software… no MIDI expression pedal. The man sure knows how to make a mouse scream though. ;)
You can check out the mp3 demo here, and get more details on the recording itself here.
Take note though: at least one of my readers is pretty unhappy with Amplitube’s apparently expensive upgrade path.
