I purchased a 63 strat & I absolutley love it. Friends of mind which have old vintage strats can't believe the sound & feel of my 62 reissue. In the words of one of my friends geez this feels better to play than my origianl 62. Although I did end up putting in some Texas Specials to give it a bit more growl. In saying that I could of just left it all standard & would of been just as happy. If your after a great sounding strat without having to deal out the big bucks for a vintage one, trust me you wont be dissapointed.

As was revealed by Fender in 2005, the coating on the '57 and '62 Vintage Reissues, as well as the vintage RE Tele's, is urethane with a top coating of nitro. The amount of urethane is 90% by volume, and 10% nitro. They do this to speed up to production process, limit the amount of warrenties while still being able to market it as a nitro coating.

I have been told the Fender American Vintage ‘62 Stratocaster Re-Issue does not have the Nitro Cellulose lacquer as they're intending to advertise.

Can someone comment on that ?

Here is an email I got from someone who really knows how to RI a vintage strat:

Do not buy a RI guitar though. The finish is not
Nitro as they're intending to advertise. It's definitely not
Nitro-Cellulose lacquer. You may already know this but just in case. The
RI would be great if it had handwound pickups and a real nitro finish.
I'd be looking for a job! I'm not kidding. It would be for all intents
and purposes a real 1962 Stratocaster if they had those details right.
But thankfully they don't!

Good review, I wish I could get my hands on one of these. I have played the vintage 60's model strat and I must say it is one of the best I have ever played, but I wonder how they compare to these? What do you think? You have played both so I was just curious to find out which one was better.

This model has a urethane base coat over which the nitro finish is applied....which makes me have to ask you...is this idea that it sounds so much better than a poly finished guitar, all in your head? Fender have produced the "thin skinned" strat which is nitro only. I think you need to do a blind test this guitar along side strats with other finishes. You could ask other people if they can hear a difference too!

Good review, Cary, but are you totally sure that guitar doesn't have a poly finish? I have a 2001 AV '62 in candy apple red and while the outer/final paint layer is nitro, the body was first covered in a layer of poly. I suppose it's possible that they stopped doing that but the cynic in me says that they've continued doing that just so they could put that it has a nitro finish in the specs. And don't even get me started on why the heck they'd bother to put a poly coat on a guitar under the nitro. That one kind of blows my mind. Haha.
