And The Award For Ugliest Stompbox of 2008 Goes To…

Fri, Feb 15, 2008

Ibanez-Steve-Vai-JeminiThe Ibanez Steve Vai Jemini Distortion Pedal… two channels of overdrive and distortion, each with individual Drive, Tone & Level controls, and all packed into a zinc die-cast chassis decked out to perfectly complement Vai’s famously color-challenged JEM guitar.

Ibanez is calling this one Vai’s “first Signature Distortion pedal…” Can that be correct? I’m not a big Steve Vai follower, but after all these years that just doesn’t seem possible.

You can check it out in all its gut-wrenching glory over on Ibanez’s official Steve Vai Jemini page. Of course, you should never judge a pedal by its color.

Even if it sounded awesome, I wouldn’t buy it just because of how nasty it looks!

  2. Cary Says:

Hehehe… I wouldn’t be caught dead with that thing, but a can of black spray paint might convince me otherwise ;)

Here’s what I don’t get: is there really room for another distortion pedal? The market is already flooded with them. How much different/better can this one sound than the other 145 pedals that came before it? And then there are all the amps that eliminate the need for a stomp box. My Vox Valvetronix creates an amazing array of tones, from mild overdrive to insane distortion, all by itself.

Anyway, even if this pedal is good, it looks grotesque.

That is disgusting. It’s not even retro-cool in any way. I think they’re trying to go for a cross between ’60s and ’80s, but neither is working for them!

  5. Kay Kastum Says:

Well, under dim lighting on stage and stuff with color effects, this thing might blend?? :P

At least you will be able to find it in a dark room!

From what I understand about Vai’s setup this is pedal is basically a Tube Screamer type pedal feeding a Boss DS-1 type pedal, which is interesting because those two pedals are almost identical with the exception of an added diode and a few different component values.

    Yikes!

Don’t they make bowling balls that look like this? The unit should come in a powder blue, leather Brunswick case just for laughs.

  9. Tom L Says:

    Strato…

Believe it or not I worked for Brunswick for 9 years. I can’t believe you thought of the bowling bag comment before I did. So, here’s the next step…when you’re using that stompbox on stage you have to wear green & red rental shoes???

I must be getting old - as I’m more interested in how a piece sounds than how it looks.

Granted most of my work is studio and not stage these days. I’d probably be a little reluctant to haul this out of the case on a live stage.

  11. Cary Says:

Na, you’re not getting old, Bullfrog––we’re just having a bit of fun ;)

How can it be that there are no actual review online? (that I can find.) But plenty of people bashing the colour?

Someone.. please… if you’ve actually played around with this.. give us some insight!

When I saw the headline I thought for sure it would be one of ours!!
