67-Sg-Special-Reissue-P-90You may remember it as Gibson’s Guitar Of The Week #37.

For me it was love at first sight (as I think I mentioned in my earlier coverage,) and while I assumed this particular model had sold-out long ago, late last week I was pleasantly surprised to find that one of the major online retailers still had some of these beauties in stock.

You don’t have to tell me twice :) So this morning I up and ordered myself one… kind of a belated Birthday present to myself––the ‘67 SG Special Reissue w/P-90’s.

I’m having the guitar shipped 2nd-Day air, so hopefully you can expect some photos and early impressions on my new acquisition by the end of the week.

I’m excited––it’ll be the first Gibson I’ve owned since I sold off my beloved cherry red ES-335 almost a decade ago… I can’t wait to get my hands dirty. Mmmmm, P-90s…..

Good man – I remember lusting after this ‘un myself, dubbing it the shortcut to the LIVE AT LEEDS tone. Yum!

  2. Cary Says:

Thanks Mark, I thought you were the other one drooling ;)

  3. Kizzy Says:

You really ARE ready to play some music with me….awesome!

  4. Tom L Says:

Cary, this guitar will rock. I said a while back on tubefreaks that P-90s are the best pickups ever created (based on my Les Paul special). I still believe that.

Can’t wait to see the pics and get your review. I bet your other guitars will stay in their cases for a while!

    You’re going to love it.
I have one from 2006 exactly like that, but they called it the “Classic”.
Same full gloss, bound fretboard, etc..
It’s a wonderful guitar. It was my first Gibson.
Honestly, if you had to own just one SG, that should probably be the one.
You can get similar tones like a Standard out of a humbucker Les Paul.
Little fatter on the LP, of course, but you know what I mean.. :)
    Enjoy it!
    Looking forward to the review.

Looks great! Can’t wait to hear your experiences with the SG. I’ve often considered buying an SG, but so far I’ve been able to hold off. Maybe this will send me over the edge ;)

  7. Stratoblogster Says:

Go Cary! It should be a real growler!

    Nice choice!

    Looks like a real player.
I’m still wondering whatever happened to the Joan Jett Melody Maker they were supposed to release.

  10. Cary Says:

Yeah, that remains a great mystery… I’m guessing we’ll see the Joan Jett model at some point as a “Inspired By” model, and that when I discovered it last year some employee had just accidentally uploaded it to the wrong part of Gibson’s website.

If I remember correctly, the product page disappeared within hours of me finding it.

  11. Steve Says:

Why did you sell the ES-335? =/ Have fun with the new axe.

  12. Cary Says:

A particularly low point in my life… sold my ES-335 and my beloved Fender Twin to help make ends meet while I was living in Portland.

    I think it was worse than a break-up ;)

  13. dbell Says:

    I hear ya brother.
Since living here in LA,CA I’ve sold two Les Pauls and more pedals than you can shake a guitar cord at.
Let’s hear it for ‘making ends meet.’

  14. Rick Says:

Making ends meet sucks! When I moved back to the USA from Australia, I sold most of my guitars….including a 70’s era Ibanez Artist John Scofield that I played all through college. Selling it broke my heart. As well as a Ramirez Concert Classical that had incredible round over tones…. Both priceless…but I needed the cash to get settled back home with the family post-internet bubble, and it wasn’t practical to ship them back.

Cary, here’s to the magic of discovering a new instrument! Best of luck with the SG.
