Well if you’re in the market for a Fender with humbuckers this post should seriously make your day… the company –– best known for a long and illustrious line of iconic single-coil loaded instruments –– has announced the release of an entire series of new instruments armed with humbuckers, including all of their biggest sellers: Strats, Teles, Jaguars and Jazzmasters.
Officially titled the Blacktop Series, I’m guessing these beauties must be made in Mexico, as they seem to be selling for a street price in the mid-$400 range.
Models include the Blacktop Stratocaster HH, Blacktop Telecaster HH, Blacktop Jaguar HH, and the Blacktop Jazzmaster HS (yep, they managed to sneak a single-coil in there!)
While there are clearly some differences in parts used, generally speaking the Blacktop guitars are loaded with high-powered, over-wound Hot Vintage Alnico Humbucker pickups, bodies of Alder, Maple necks with Rosewood or Maple fingerboards (9.5″ radius,) 22 Medium Jumbo frets, gloss poly finish, 3-ply black pickguards, chrome hardware, synthetic bone nut, and skirted black amp-style knobs.
The Blackout Series of guitars are clearly being marketed towards today’s younger high-gain crowd, and at such a low price-point it seems very possible that Fender will have a winner on its hands if it can adequately get the word out to the youthful shredder market… I’ll be interested to see how this pans out.

The pickups configuration in this Jazzmaster looks quite useful – something for a punch, something for a slim chord.
